If you could change your future, would you? Dona Juliana Damião is, and she’s doing it by taking a risk and doing an experiment. Dona Damião is from Murrece, on Mount Namuli and she is takin a leap with our Legado: Namuli team to test a crop rather unusual around this area: ginger.

Gingers are a fairly new exotic product that is well-sought after in the markets around Gurué and beyond, and our agro team believes ginger plants would thrive in Namuli’s climatic conditions. Dona Juliana, and her neighbors in Murrece and Murrabué have started small scale trials to learn about the results before scaling up the initiative on other farms.

Introducing new cash crops is both a challenge and an opportunity to increase the income of families in Mount Namuli by merging periods of cash gaps (periods when farmers don’t have products to sell in the market). To maximize the benefits, our team needs to plan the trials closely together with the farmers to consider their workload over the year and the land available for other essential food crops. As the ginger plants grow in the slopes of Namuli, we wait patiently to harvest the roots of the leap we took together towards more diverse and thriving crops.

Experiments like these is just one of the many ways our team supports Namuli community members in realizing their own legacies — balancing their own individual needs with the impact on their surrounding environment.
