In 2024, Legado officially launched a partnership to support Indigenous stewardship of the Nyekweri ecosystem in southwest Kenya.

The Nyekweri ecosystem and the adjacent Maasai Mara Reserve area are a refuge for a range of wildlife stewarded by the Maasai people and other Indigenous groups for centuries. Legado is supporting The Pangolin Project to use a Thriving Futures Model in partnership with Maasai landowners.

Through a series of community convenings that include many local voices, Indigenous stewards are creating a holistic Landscape Management Plan that preserves the biodiversity of the forest and rangelands and furthers their well-being.

“2024 has been a pivotal year of fostering collaboration, linkage, and bridging. One of the highlights was initiating work in a new landscape in Nyekweri in partnership with The Pangolin Project. This unique setup provided an opportunity to embrace adaptive learning, explore fresh approaches to collaboration, and deepen engagement with communities.”

- Walter Lenolngenje, Thriving Futures Program Coordinator
