Community members celebrate taking collective action to advance their Thriving Future near Mount Namuli, Mozambique | Roshni Lodhia/Legado

Legado:Namuli is Legado’s foundational program working with the Lomwe communities encircling Mount Namuli, Mozambique, a key biodiversity area.

Namuli is where, in 2014, we began with a hard-earned $11,000 and a passionate international team of social scientists, biologists, and more. Since then our Legado:Namuli team has worked with more than 24,000 people on the mountain to realize the legacies they have defined.
In September 2024, the first communities on Mount Namuli celebrated the completion of Legacy Plans after the community members elected to go through the full Thriving Futures process. This was following nearly a decade of close partnership between Legado and communities around Mount Namuli, a collaboration that helped develop the processes and concepts on which Thriving Futures is built. From this time, community priorities have already emerged, and local people have taken significant collective action to make their priorities a reality. This year saw community members take action on deforestation, launch a new Village Savings and Loan Program, and more—all based on their community-led priorities.

"2024 was a year of big steps forward for the Namuli communities. One of the highlights was the official launch of the Mucunha Community Plan, celebrated with a community-wide gathering in Mucunha on September 18. It was an exciting event that brought together everyone—from community leaders and elected community champions to government representatives and key partners. The day wasn’t just about celebrating—it also sparked important conversations about how to move forward with the plan’s priorities.

Other milestones, such as the launch of the VSLA and reforestation work, show just how much progress is being made. Together, local people are laying the foundation for stronger, connected, and resilient communities in Namuli."
