Samburu community members meet to create their vision of a Thriving Future in Northern Kenya | Roshnia Lodhia/Legado

Nkishon Supat e Ngilai, which translates from Samburu to “Ngilai’s Thriving Future,” is a collaboration between Legado and the Ngilai Wildlife Community Conservancy.

The Community Conservancy is home to more than 11,000 primarily Samburu people and contains the core of the Mathews Range—a spiritual home of the Samburu, a key source of water for the surrounding valleys, and the core grazing area that supports the livelihoods of its stewards.

As communities in Ngilai, Northern Kenya, continue implementing their community-defined priorities—from stewarding natural resources to maternal health to amplifying women’s leadership—they find opportunities for their Community Conservancy Legacy Management Plan to drive regional partnerships.

“It’s inspiring to see communities take the lead in safeguarding their unique landscapes and heritage while fostering linkages with stakeholders to build a legacy that ties healthy ecosystems to thriving livelihoods on a legacy journey to achieving a Thriving Future. This year reaffirmed that community-driven action is the cornerstone of sustainable change.”
