A Journey of Adventure, Discovery, and Legacy Building in Peru in 2025

Featuring 360° Community-Led Change and a Visit to Machu Picchu

June 10-20, 2025

We Have a Future To Craft Together

In 2025, Legado community members will have a chance to journey to the land of Peru’s Machigenga Communal Reserve and Megantoni National Sanctuary to be part of our program working in partnership with the Indigenous and local stewards of the Andes Amazon.

Join us on a journey of adventure and creation. The trip combines working with the Indigenous communities who steward the Machigenga Communal Reserve and Megantoni National Sanctuary to create their legacies with adventures like mountain hiking and exploring in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

This journey culminates with a chance to take part in Legado’s signature Legacy Planning process. As a Legado Champion, you will support 360° Community-Led Change alongside community members around priorities that advance stronger livelihoods, healthier forests, gender equity, and more—leading to Thriving Futures for all. We will celebrate our time together by exploring Machu Picchu as our final event.

Journey Details

Our trip begins with a quick overnight in Lima before we fly to Cusco—the gateway to Peru’s mountains. After exploring Cusco, we journey through Peru’s Sacred Valley and the Malaga Mountain Pass to arrive in the Quillabamba, which means the Valley of the Moon in Quechua.

Our time together is focused around the landscape housing the Machigenga Communal Reserve and Megantoni National Sanctuary—the heart of the Vilcabamba Mountains and the Avireri-Vraem Biosphere Reserve, one of the newest UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. It is also the site of Legado’s partnership with Peru’s National Service of Natural Protected Areas Megantoni National Sanctuary and Machiguenga Communal Reserve teams to create Thriving Futures with Indigenous and local peoples who call the reserve home.

Our journey includes exploring the lush landscape within Megantoni National Sanctuary.

Once we are in Quillabamba, you and fellow Legado Champions will jump in and help support Legado’s signature Legacy Workshop with community participants as they craft their Thriving Future. Each champion contributes in different ways, from helping facilitate a women’s discussion about micro-business opportunities, to drawing flip charts in English and Spanish, welcoming and thanking participants, and more. You are truly one of our team as we all work to create an inclusive, dynamic, and fruitful Legacy program.

Our time in Peru also includes exploring the Vilcabamba mountains and foothills. This region hosts 12 different ecosystems in three ecoregions: the Amazon rainforest at the foot of the Andes; Yungas on the steep, cloud-forested mountain slopes; and the high-elevation region in the Andes mountain range. Between our time with local communities and in Quillabamba, we will also visit artisanal chocolate farms and local handicraft cooperatives. Our time together culminates with a visit to Machu Picchu, which we access via gentle walk from the hydroelectric station as our luggage arrives by train. We have a day to explore Machu Picchu before we return to Cusco, Lima, and beyond.

We've Been Running Our Legacy Expeditions Since 2015 — Join Us!

Legado + You in 2025

Legacy expeditions are an incredible way to activate your own legacy by advancing a world where Indigenous and local peoples are the drivers of change—for their people, their culture, and their landscapes.

Note that trips can be adapted to match different activity levels and interests.

Join us to support Indigenous and local communities who steward the Machiguenga Communal Reserve and Megantoni National Sanctuary to create their vision and initiate actions for their Thriving Future for their people and environment during our 2025 Peru Legacy Expedition.

Please note: Legacy expeditions are intended for those inside Legado’s giving community who are committed to advancing 360° Community-Led Change. If you are not yet part of our giving community, we welcome you to make your first significant contribution at the same time as your Legacy Expedition donation.

“My experience traveling to Mount Namuli and working with Legado was exceptional. The participants in our three-day workshop ranged from community members, to agricultural specialists, to Ministry Officials. This area of the planet is more beautiful than anywhere I’ve traveled, and I’d be thrilled for another opportunity to walk under the open sky of Mozambique. Majka’s style of leadership includes self-discovery, autonomy, and movement. I came away from my trip to Mount Namuli a transformed person and more able to be in service of my own community.“
